today. the scheduled committee is scheduled to hear from five including the husband of wounded former congresswoman gabrielle giffor giffords. there was a buyback that appeared to be a rocket lawn cher. all of this seven weeks after the newtown massacre and as the president and members of congress lay out their proposal for gun control. susan mcginnis is in washington. good morning, susan. >> good morning, anne-marie. this could be quite a rumble here on capitol hill. you have wayne lapierre head of the nra, gabby gifford's husband strong advocate and some of the strongest senators we've got all talking about one of the most devicive issues we face. emotions cou run high today when the husband of former congresswoman gabriel le

giffords joins wayne lapierre. patrick lay hee called the hearing in response to the newton shooting where 20 children and six adults were killed. but lapierre doesn't believe the shooting should lead to new gun control laws. he plans to tell the committee law and gun owners will not september the senator dianne feinstein gets her turn to question lapierre at today's hearing. feinstein has been an outspoken critic of the nra. tuesday she told reporters they have fought virtually every kind of regulatioregulation. the time has come to changed course and make people safe. lapierre says the government shouldn't pass any new laws until the government start ts enforcing the laws already on the books. it's still unclear whether

gabrielle giffords will attend. but we understand there will be a surprise guest today. he's not identifying who that is. >> that should be interesting. susan mcginnis in washington, thanks. >> another high-profile issue for congress is immigration reform. president obama speaking in nevada yad said now's the time. warned if congress doesn't act he will. danielle nottingham reports. >> reporter: president obama told students at the predominantly hispanic high school in las vegas he's keeping his campaign promise to reform immigration. >> we need congress to act on a comprehensive approach that finally deals with the 11 million undocumented immigrants who are in the country right now. >> reporter: the president supports the plan that the so-called gang of eight unveiled on monday. it would allow illegal immigrants to gain temporary

legal status if they passed a background check, paid a fine, back taxes and learned english. >> for the first time in many years, republicans and democrats seem ready to tackle this problem together. >> reporter: some gop house members say they don't support the senate proposal, but some of the biggest opposition to immigration reform could come from outside the halls of congress. republican senator marco rubio went on conservative radio to drum up support from a skeptical rush limbaugh. >> if 70% of the hispanics went republican do you thank'd be any part of this legislation? >> it is clearly a trojan horse, which really reforms nothing. >> reporter: the group of eight senators sponsoring the legislation say once the language is agreed upon, the bill could come up for a vote as early as this summer.

danielle nottingham, cbs news, washington. well, also on capitol hill, the senate overwhelmingly confirmed senator john kerry to be the next secretary of state. yesterday's vote was 94-3. kerry plans to resign from the senate on friday. earlier he was unanimously approved by the senate foreign relations committee which he chaired for the next four years. so what's the woman kerry is replacing saying? she says she has no plans to run for president in 2016 but is looking forward to the next chapter. some are getting a leg up. they formed a super pac. it's called "ready for hillary." well, some severe weather including dangerous thunderstorms and the potential for tornados swept through the south and central u.s. overnight. torrential rain lasted through the night into the morning. there were downed trees and

power outages in arkansas and severe weather is expected in tennessee and mississippi. meteorologist david bernard of our miami station wfor is tracking this powerful weather front. >> the big story today is going to be the continued threat for heavy rain and severe weather from the southeast extending into the northeastern corner of the united states. this front is going to bring severe weather potential from the panhandle to this area. if we follow the front to the north we're looking at flood watches for a good part of the northeast, strong to severe thunderstorms possible this evening and tonight as that front approaches the coastline. on the opposite side of that, we're looking at cold air spilling into the midwest. the rain we saw yesterday in chicago is going to end as a little bit of light snow with temperatures in the upper 30s. very cold in the plains with highs in the teens and 20s. out west it looks pretty quiet in southern california.

l.a., not bad. look for rain in the northwest. seattle and portland kind of dreary and temperatures in the 40s. i'm david bernard for cbs news, miami. overseas now, a police inspector says penny pinching may have caused that deadly nightclub fire in brazil. at least 234 people, mostly students, died in sunday morning's file. they say the band used cheap outdoor flare frgs their display instead of the much more expensive flares. it's estimated up to 1,300 were in there nearly double the size. they're allowing bp to plead guilty to manslaughter. the agreement ends the criminal investigation of the deepwater horizon disaster. bp pleaded guilty in the deaths of 1 oil rig workers and agreed to pay a record $4 billion in penalties, but the deal does not

anne-marie. well, boeing apparently knew about the problems with the batteries on their dreamliners. nonaupon airways said it replaced ten electricity onbatteries months and told boeing about it but not federal investigators. the ntsc said tuesday it's now conducting a microscopic investigation of the battery. stocks in asia rallied on promising growth data in china. norfolk co-'s nikkei gain 2d% while hong kong's hang seng dropped. it added 72 point tuesday to close at 13,954. that's only 210 points away from its all-time high set in october of 2007. the dmanasdaq fell slightly. amazon.com posted its

purchased human growth hormones and peds. four years ago he admitted to using performance-enhancing drugs earlier in his career. the documents also list six other major leaguers. three of them failed major league drug tests last year. meanwhile one of the most talked about players in super bowl xlvii is fending off allegations that he used performance-enhancing drugs. ray lewis dismissed a "sports illustrated" that he used deer antler spray. >> there's never been a question if i've ever even thought about using anything. so to even entertain stupidity like that is correct tell them to go get their story from someone else. another story paying out,

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. washington, d.c. and atlanta both in the high 60s and can expect some rain. st. louis afternoon flurries, a high of 46. denver, partly sunny, high of 44, seattle, rain and 50. i don't know if this is for the cat lovers or cat haters. they may be cute and cudably but they kill more animals than we

thought. both domestic and free roaming kill up to 3.7 million birds and 20 billion other animals each year. that's a lot more than previous studies which suggested they kill 500 million a year. an iraq veteran who lost all four limbs in an attack is speaking out about a remarkable surgery that gave him two new arms. bigad shaban has that story. brendan wheeled himself into his own news conference. six weeks after his arms transplant he seemed comfortable with his new limbs. >> i never accepted the fact that i didn't have arms. now that i have them again it's almost like it never happened. it's like i went back four years, and i'm me again. >> reporter: four years ago morocco lost his arms and four legs to a roadside bomb. a year later he told cbs news

which loss was greater. >> without legs you can still be independent, you know. without arms there's so much more that you can't do. >> reporter: it took 16 doctors at johns hopkins doctors 13 hours to attach the arms of an anonymous donor who had died and they also performs a relatively new procedure that would reduce the chance of rejection. >> he received a bone marrow cells from the arm donor so he'll only take one anti-rejection injection instead of the triple-drug cocktail. his tissues will grow into the donated arm at a rate of inches a month. he should regain enough feeling to do just about everything with his hands. he says he wants to drive again and push himself to new limits. bigad shaban, cbs news. well, coming up after your local news on "cbs this

2013. i'm jessica doyle in for andrea roane. 16 days till valentine's day so get your shopping done. i don't know. good morning. i'm mike hydeck. we're almost halfway through this thing. >> good morning. lots to tell you. >> we already have an issue. hello, april. >> yesterday, i blew the forecast. i thought we'd have 50 to 6 60. we had 69. >> we like it when you blow the forecast. >> today we could have thunderstorms rolling through the region. rather mild out there. the winds are still on the light side. we'll pick up big time by the middle of the day, 15, 20 miles an hour gusting to 35 at times. we're going to be rather warm, too. mid-60s by lunch time. i think we get up toward 70 today in spite of the clouds and sunny breaks. by 5:00 showers and storms, mainly west of town. i think they'll be approaching

us as we had toward the dinner time. big line of showers and storms to the west. several tornado watches already in the ohio and tennessee valley. these red boxes with this line of storms coming in. a few showers out ahead of it trying to get into southwestern virginia. temperatures are still a little chilly in hagerstown at 37 but luray is 61. got a facebook message from somebody who works at the then dough v.a. yale -- at the shenandoah valley golf course. boy, were they busy. going toward 70 this afternoon with storms, too. big problems on the beltway in prince george's county. good morning, everybody. just before 3:00 this morning an accident involving a fire truck, tractor-trailer and suv heading southbound on 495. so that's what we call the inner loop of the beltway right here south of route 50. this is the scene of the crash. we'll take a look from our mdot camera so you can get some

perspective. the latest information is that one lane gets by in each direction of the beltway. you can see them squeezing by here with the flairs set up. one lane getting by on the other side of the road as well. the accident occurred on the inner loop of the beltway south of route 50. our mike on the scene there tells us can you get on the beltway using route 50 to the inner loop of the beltway now that one lane does get by but expect delays. if you travel on the inner loop, i might suggest you use route 450 to 202 as your alternate route. there were many injuries, seven injuries all together, transported to the hospital, four of which were firefighters. it will be here for a while. we'll keep you posted oaferg you need to know -- posted on everything you need to know. >> again, four prince george's firefighters are be treated for this crash. two of them were critically hurt in this. >> a jeep, a fire truck and a

tractor-trailer were involved in the wreck. seven people we believe at this point were hurt. just one lane in each direction of the belt wie is open, as monika was saying. investigators are still piecing together all the details of this crash. the senate judiciary committee takes up gun control on capitol hill today. >> as susan mcginnis reports, we could see some heated exchanges between the california senator and the head of the national rifle association. >> reporter: emotions could run high today when the former congressman gabriel giffords will choin the nra chief to testify at a senate gun control hearing. patrick leahy called the hearing in response to the school shooting in newtown, connecticut where 20 children and six adults were killed
